In addition to the start-up grants, the ODH also announced in April the launch of the Digital Public Library of America. The project was funded last year with a $1 million grant with the ambitious goal of bringing “together universities, libraries, archives, museums, government agencies, and other cultural heritage institutions to develop a unified gateway into vast digital collections dispersed across the country.” According to the ODH, the DPLA includes over 1.2 million items, not limited to only text, but also illustrations, maps, manuscripts, and photographs.
